10 energy boosting ideas - Pam Mathis Nutritionist Sarasota Lakewood Ranch

I don’t know a single adult who says

“I have too much energy!”

As adults, especially as we age….

We’re sleep deprived so we feel groggy upon waking.
We depend on coffee or other forms of caffeine to get us going.
We crash mid-afternoon and want to take a nap.
And all we want to do in the evening is sit on the couch.

Can you relate?

Self-care is SO important – and boosting our energy is part of that!

That’s why I wanted to share 10 energy boosting ideas to start your day.

I do a combination of many of these EVERY morning – and I tell my clients to do the same.
Try 2, 3 or 4 of these and see how much better your day can go!

#1 – Wake up with the sun.

Did you know that sunlight exposure in the early morning can reset your circadian rhythm, turn off your melatonin production (to help you not be sleepy during the day) and improve your brain’s ability to function? It can!
Examples can include:
  • Leaving your curtains open and enjoying the first rays of light while waking up with nature.
  • Sitting out on the patio upon waking.
  • Taking the dog for a walk before breakfast.

#2 – Walk barefoot in the grass/sand/dirt.

This process – called earthing – is when your bare skin comes in direct contact with the surface of the earth. It allows your body to absorb the negative ions from the earth and makes you feel more grounded, balanced, and provides feelings of well-being.
Can’t picture it? Think of walking on the beach and feeling the energy of the ocean. You can feel that same energy by walking in the grass or on the sand barefoot.
Examples can include:
  • Taking your breakfast outside on a lawn chair while your bare feet touch the grass.
  • Enjoying a morning walk barefoot on the beach.
  • Practicing your morning yoga poses in the grass.

#3 – Meditate.

Meditation can reduce stress and anxiety, enhance your mood, promote healthy sleep patterns, and boost cognitive skills. It can also help you set intentions for the day as you get in touch with your inner wisdom.
Examples can include:
  • Sitting in the sun with your feet touching the grass (see how I’m habit-stacking these tips?) for 5-10 minutes and focus on the sun on your face.
  • Using an app like Calm to try short guided meditations.
  • Closing your eyes and visualizing yourself in a beautiful serene place, noticing the sights, sounds, smells, and energy there.

#4 – Practice gratitude.

Gratitude is scientifically proven to boost mood and put you in a positive state of mind.
Examples can include:
  • Having a journal dedicated to gratitude and writing 3 things/day in it.
  • Creating 3 sticky notes/day of things you are grateful for and placing them at your desk or on your bathroom mirror.

#5 – Move your body.

Early exercise can help you start the day with more energy, focus, and optimism. Plus, after a morning workout, you’re more likely to eat healthy and stay active throughout the day.
Examples can include:
  • Walking the dog.
  • Stretching.
  • Practicing yoga or qi gong.
  • Getting in water.

#6 – Dry brush your skin before showering.

Dry brushing is a daily body massage with a dry, stiff-bristled brush that can help stimulate your lymphatic system, increase circulation, detoxify, help digestion and more.  And it will leave your skin glowing!
Examples can include:
  • A dry brush can be found at health stores or on Amazon for $5-20 and can be a quick 5-minute addition to your shower routine that can have amazing benefits.
  • Brush gently but with intention from your feet and hands toward your heart to stimulate lymph flow before you turn on the shower.

#7 – Have a high protein breakfast.

Protein stabilizes your blood sugar to help prevent the mid-morning crash and help you have more sustained energy levels. It’s also essential for your brain and for building muscle!
Examples can include:
  • A protein smoothie.
  • Avocado toast with egg on top.
  • Adding in nut butter and hemp seeds to your oatmeal.

#8 – Give yourself or someone else a hug.

Hugging helps lower our stress throughout the day by boosting our “feel good” hormone called oxytocin. It’s also a wonderful way to show yourself some love and positive energy!
Examples can include:
  • Hugging yourself while you enjoy the sunshine.
  • Asking your partner for a long hug to boost the morning for BOTH of you!

#9 – Hydrate.

Did you know that hydration is the leading cause of fatigue? And after sleeping all night, you are already dehydrated.
(And just in case you are wondering – caffeine does not hydrate! In fact, it’s a diuretic.)
Examples can include:
  • Keeping a big glass of water by your bedside to drink upon waking.
  • Drinking a glass of water before your coffee and in between any other drinks you have throughout the day.

#10 – Enjoy invigorating aromatherapy with citrus essential oil.

Citrus – whether it’s orange, lemon or a combination  – is a naturally mood-elevating scent that boosts your serotonin. It’s a way to bring in another sensory experience to help you feel focused and energized.
Examples can include:
  • Diffusing citrus oil in your office or wherever you spend the most time.
  • Putting a drop or 2 of a citrus essential oil on the inside of your wrist to smell throughout the day.
I hope you’ll try a few of these out!
